Concrete pool decks in Calabasas CA - a deck that grips wet feet and spares the coping

Cracked, slick or tired deck around your pool? We'll tell you whether a coating will do or a new pour is the right call.

Concrete pool deck surrounds a turquoise swimming pool beneath a screened enclosure, with planted beds along the edge.

What goes into a concrete pool deck that lasts?

We build concrete pool decks in Calabasas, CA, and redo old ones, so you end up with a walking surface that carries water away from the house, keeps dirty runoff out of the pool and gives wet, bare feet something to grip.

Most people call when the deck has cracked, gone slick or started to feel rough underfoot. The price comes down to the deck's size, whether the old one has to come out, how much work the ground under it needs and the finish you pick.

The schedule turns mostly on whether we coat the old deck or pour a new one, since a coating goes on a lot faster, plus the wait while new concrete cures and any permit check for your address. I'll give you your own number in the written estimate once I've looked at the deck.

What happens after you call about your pool deck?

It's the same people from the first visit to the last bucket of cleanup, and here's who does what.

I come out and look at the deck myself

I walk the deck and the pool edge, listen to what you want from it and answer your questions on the spot. I learned this trade hauling and setting forms on a crew, and I've run this business in Calabasas since 2020.

A written estimate you can read on your own time

After the visit I write up the estimate so you can look it over without me standing there. If a line in it doesn't make sense, call and ask, because I'd rather answer one more question now than leave you guessing later.

Fully licensed and insured, on site through cleanup

Once you're ready, we sort out the paperwork and do the prep, and I'm on the job with our crew through the pour and the cleanup. We're fully licensed and insured.

How we handle concrete pool decks

Every pool deck job starts with the deck you have now. I look at its cracks first and tell you honestly whether a coating makes sense or a new pour is the better call, because I'd rather say that before you spend money than after. On a new deck we leave a flexible joint, a sealant-filled gap, where the deck meets the coping, the cap along the pool edge, so the deck can move without pulling the coping and tile loose or cracking the tile at the water line. That joint has to run the full depth of the deck and needs looking after over the years, so I'll show you where it is before we leave.

A pool deck often ties into other work around the yard. If it steps up to a patio or the back door, we can build the concrete steps in the same job, and a pool house or equipment shed gets the same ground-first approach as our slab foundation building.

  • A look at your old deck's cracks and a straight answer on coating versus a new pour
  • Tear-out and haul-away of the old deck when it's being replaced
  • Drains, skimmers and pipes laid out with you before we set forms
  • A slip-resistant finish you choose before the pour
  • A flexible joint where the deck meets the pool edge

How a new pool deck goes in

Most of what decides whether a deck holds up happens before anyone sees a finished surface.

  1. Check where the water goes

Before we dig, we look at how your yard drains, because the deck has to carry water away from the house and away from the pool. A deck that falls toward the house is cheap to fix before the pour and expensive after.

  2. Dig out and pack the base

We dig down and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, instead of raking dirt level and pouring over it. If the budget gets tight, the base is the last place I'll cut, because nobody sees it on day one but a deck that settles with the dirt cracks wherever it wants.

  3. Pour, finish and cut joints

We set the forms, lay the rebar, which is steel that holds the slab together, and pour at a time of day when the top won't bake and turn weak and dusty later. Then we cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a planned place to crack, before it picks its own.

  4. Let it cure, then clean up

Curing is the wait while the concrete gains strength, and walking on it too early can mark the surface, so we'll tell you when it's ready for use. We clean up the site before we call the job done.

Pool deck questions we hear in Calabasas

What is the safest concrete finish for a pool deck when it's wet?

A broom finish, made by dragging a broom across the fresh concrete to leave fine lines for grip, is the most common pool deck finish because it gives reliable traction, holds up and keeps the cost down. Whatever you pick, slip resistance should come first since the deck gets wet and walked barefoot, and very dark colors can get uncomfortable in full sun. Stamped concrete needs resealing now and then, and one guide warns the wrong sealer gets dangerously slick when wet, so it says to always use a non-slip additive.

Can I resurface my old pool deck instead of replacing it?

Often you can, if the deck underneath is sound. A coating usually takes 1 to 2 days to apply compared with 5 to 7 days for a full pour, but the cracks already in the deck will eventually show through it. A deck that's still moving, has settled or has several wide cracks needs structural repair before any coating goes on.

How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Calabasas?

Around Los Angeles, a concrete pool deck usually costs about $4.50 to $10 per square foot. That's the going rate for the deck itself in the area, not our quote, and where yours lands depends mostly on tear-out, ground prep and the finish. I'll give you your own number in the estimate after I've seen the deck.

Who issues the permit for a pool deck in Calabasas?

If your property is in unincorporated LA County, LA County Public Works issues building permits there, and if it's outside the county's jurisdiction, another office may handle it. So the first thing to confirm is whether your address is unincorporated. Whether the job needs a permit is up to the city or county, not us, and we check with the office that covers your address before we start and work through what they ask for with you.

Building a pool deck in Calabasas

If you have a question about work at a Calabasas address, the city's Building and Safety Division takes questions by email at BuildingSafetyInfo@cityofcalabasas.com. California also requires any contracting job of $1,000 or more to be done by a contractor with a current license in the right classification, and the state's concrete class covers forming, pouring and finishing flat work like a pool deck.

Once your deck is in, the upkeep is simple but it matters. Repair or seal gaps and cracks soon after they show up so water doesn't work its way underneath, and keep an eye on that joint at the coping. We're based in Calabasas and do the same pool deck work across the cities around it, like Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and Malibu, and if your city isn't on our list, call and ask.

Send us your deck size and photos

Call (747) 269-3817 or send the form with your deck's square footage and photos of any cracks, so I come out already knowing whether a coating is worth talking about.

If you've got a question about your pool deck before you want an estimate, send it over and I'll answer it.
